What is a bubble type ripple mattress?
A bubble type mattress is built from a grid of small round air cells, usually around 6cm high, arranged in rows across the surface. The pump alternates air between odd and even rows. It is lightweight, compact, cheaper to produce, and easy to move between rooms or take to hospital. Because the cells are shallow, a heavy patient can bottom out onto the base mattress if the pressure is set too low, which is the main limitation. It suits patients at low to moderate risk: someone on temporary bed rest after surgery, an elderly person who still shifts position occasionally, or a patient of average weight.
What is a tubular or column type ripple mattress?
A tubular mattress, also sold as column type or tube type, uses long horizontal air tubes running across the bed instead of small cells. The tubes are taller, typically 10cm or more, and hold far more air. That extra depth means the patient sits inside the surface rather than on top of it, pressure spreads over a much larger area, and bottoming out is far less likely. Many column models also let you deflate individual tubes for heel relief, and some include low air loss, where tiny perforations release a constant flow of air to keep skin dry. This is the type used for high risk patients and existing ulcers.

Which one should you buy?
Choose a bubble type if the patient weighs under about 100kg, has healthy skin with no existing sores, is expected to be on bed rest for weeks rather than months, and has a caregiver who can still reposition them a couple of times a day. Choose a tubular or column type if the patient already has a pressure ulcer, weighs over 100kg, is fully immobile or unconscious, is in long term or palliative care, or has had sores before. If you are unsure and the patient is borderline, the tubular type is the safer purchase. A pressure ulcer costs more to treat than the price difference between the two mattresses.
What else separates a good set from a cheap one
- Cover material. A proper waterproof, breathable, latex-free PVC or nylon cover wipes clean and does not trap sweat. Thin unbacked PVC cracks within months.
- Pump build. A quiet pump with a cleanable filter and a real pressure dial lasts. Sealed cheap pumps fail once the filter clogs.
- Cycle time. Anything between about 6 and 12 minutes is normal. Very long cycles reduce the benefit.
- Repairability. Ask whether individual cells can be replaced. On many cheap sets one puncture means the whole mattress is scrap.
- Warranty and who honours it. A warranty is only worth what the seller will actually do when you call.
