Ripple Mattress Pump Guide: How to Operate It and Fix Common Faults
A ripple mattress pump must run continuously on 240V mains for the mattress to work. Connect both air tubes, switch on, set the dial for the patient's weight and wait 20 to 30 minutes for the cells to fill before the patient lies down. The cycle then repeats every 6 to 12 minutes. If the cells will not fill, re-seat the tubes first, then clean the air filter. Pumps on sets from Ripple Mattresses Kenya carry a 6-month warranty, and replacement pumps are available on 0710 470 180.
Plug the pump in, push both air tubes onto the outlets until they seat, switch on and turn the dial to suit the patient's weight: low under 50kg, middle for 50 to 80kg, high above 80kg. Wait 20 to 30 minutes, then check firmness by sliding a flat hand under the patient's lower back. Leave the pump on day and night. Most pump faults are a loose tube or a dirty filter.
The parts of the pump

- Power switch. On the side or front. The pump stays on all the time.
- Pressure dial. Sets how firm the cells inflate. Turn it up for a heavier patient.
- Two air outlets. One for each air tube, one for each set of cells.
- Air filter. A foam pad behind the cover where air is drawn in. Keep it clean.
- Hanging hooks. For the footboard of the bed.
How to operate a ripple mattress pump
- Hang the pump on the footboard or set it on a hard floor, away from curtains and carpet.
- Push both air tubes onto the outlets until they seat firmly.
- Plug into a 240V socket and switch on.
- Turn the dial to the setting for the patient's weight (table below).
- Wait 20 to 30 minutes for the cells to fill before the patient lies down.
- Do the hand check: slide a flat hand, palm up, under the deflated cells at the patient's lower back. It should go in with slight resistance.
- Leave the pump running day and night.
Pressure dial settings by patient weight
| Patient weight | Dial position | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Under 50kg | Low | Hand slides in easily but not loosely |
| 50 to 80kg | Middle | Slight resistance at the lower back |
| 80 to 135kg | High | Hand must not touch the base mattress |
Re-check after a few hours and whenever the patient's weight changes. Too soft lets the body sink through to the mattress below. Too hard makes the surface uncomfortable and reduces the benefit.
Ripple mattress pump not working: fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pump does not switch on | No power at the socket, switch off, or a blown plug fuse | Test the socket with a phone charger, check the switch, replace the plug fuse |
| Pump runs, cells stay flat | Air tube not seated on the outlet | Pull both connectors off and push them back on firmly |
| Cells fill slowly or stay soft | Clogged air filter, or dial set too low | Clean the foam filter, then turn the dial up |
| One side stays flat | Kinked tube or a punctured cell | Straighten the tube under the bed. If the side still fails, call us |
| Pump is loud or buzzing | Vibrating against the bed frame or sitting on carpet | Rehang it so it hangs free, or set it on a hard floor |
| Pump runs but cells never alternate | Faulty valve inside the pump | Warranty repair or replacement. Call 0710 470 180 |
| Mattress goes soft during a power cut | Normal. The pump has stopped | Turn the patient by hand until power returns, then let it refill |
Power cuts and voltage
The cells hold air for a while after the power goes, so the patient is not lying on a flat pad straight away. Reposition them by hand every two hours until power is back. Plug the pump into a surge protector to guard it against the spikes that come when power returns.
Looking after the pump
- Clean the air filter every few weeks. A clogged filter is the most common cause of weak inflation.
- Never put the pump in water. Wipe the outside with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Keep the tubes free of kinks where they pass under the bed.
- Do not cover the pump with blankets.

Common questions
How do I operate a ripple mattress pump?
Connect both air tubes, plug into 240V and switch on. Set the dial for the patient's weight, wait 20 to 30 minutes for the cells to fill, check firmness with a flat hand under the lower back, and leave it running day and night.
Should the ripple mattress pump stay on all night?
Yes. The pressure relief only happens while the pump is cycling, and night is when a patient goes longest without being turned.
Why is my ripple mattress pump not inflating the mattress?
Most often an air tube is not pushed fully onto the pump outlet. Re-seat both connectors. If it still fills weakly, clean the air filter and turn the dial up.
Can I buy a replacement ripple mattress pump?
Yes. Call or WhatsApp 0710 470 180 with a photo of your pump and we will confirm the match and price. Pumps on our sets are covered by a 6-month warranty.
Is the ripple mattress pump noisy?
It makes a low continuous hum suitable for a bedroom. A loud buzz usually means it is vibrating against the bed frame or sitting on carpet. Rehang it so it hangs free.
